Is Glow In The Dark Powder Safe and Non Toxic?

Nov 23, 2022
The short answer to this question is, yes, glow in the dark powder is 100% safe, non-toxic and non-radioactive. The long answer to this question, well, we will first need to take a look at the composition of the glow in the dark powder and what makes it to have its glow color.

There are many types of glow in the dark powder sold and used in the market, strontium aluminate based glow pigment being the most popular one because of its long glow time and high glow intensity.

Right now, there are two types of strontium aluminate based glow in the dark powder that can be massively produced and used: SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy, emitting a yellow-green light and Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy, emitting a blue-green light. These two glow pigment is made by firing SrCO3, Dy2O3, Eu2O3, Al2O3 and flux. After firing, then the material is crushed and sieved to make glow in the dark powder with all kinds of grain size, glow time and luminosity. SrCO3, Dy2O3, Al2O3 is the oxide form of strontium, dysprosium and aluminium respectively. Strontium and dysprosium are types of rare-earth metals, and is non-toxic and non-radioactive.

The glow in the dark phenomenon of strontium aluminate glow pigment is caused by electronic transaction. To put it simply, when the pigment is excited by light, it will “catch” and store the electronics. When it turns dark, these stored electronics will be slowly released by thermal disturbance of the room temperature. The released electronics will again transact into excited status, when these electronics return to ground state, then the pigment will produce the afterglow.
