What are the applications of cellulose acetate butyrate?
Feb 09, 2023Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a thermoplastic cellulose ester with a butyryl content of 30-55 % by weight. It is the most commercially important blended cellulose ester, with many attractive properties such as low viscosity, high clarity and surface gloss, improved resistance to moisture and ultraviolet (UV) light, and excellent intercoating adhesion. CAB is compatible with many resin systems, including most acrylates, polyesters, phenols, ureas, and isocyanates. However, they are generally incompatible with melamine, urea-aldehydes, and many alkynes. Both solubility and miscibility depend on the butyl-group content; Generally, solubility in many resins and solvents increases with increasing butylyl content. For example, CAB resins with high butylyl content are soluble in many mixtures of esters, ketones, glycol ethers, alcohols, and aromatic hydrocarbons.
CAB is commonly used in coating formulations that require low application viscosity at relatively high solids content. When added to a coating formulation, it enhances many of the properties of the coating, such as hardness, leveling, solvent resistance, clarity and shine, while reducing dry contact time, pitting, orange streaks and blocking. Because of CAB's superior property, it has many uses in coatings, including metal and wood coatings, gravure and flexographic inks, graphic art, inkjet printing inks, nail paint topcoats, automotive varnishes and primers, and general industrial coatings.
